February 2021 Development Update

Hi Everyone,

Development of the game is going well. I would say about 90% of the game mechanics are done. There are really two groups of things outstanding:

  • I am using the XR toolkit and OpenXR plugins which are not quite final yet in Unity. Everything works great on Oculus Rift S, but the OpenXR toolkit will need to be finished before I can test it on other headsets. I expect Valve to be done with that around Q2.
  • In the meantime, I have a lot of work left in the area of game progression and balancing. The achievement and perk system is in place, but I need to configure and decide what those achievements will specifically be. Once OpenXR is done, I can then hook up into the specific achievements for the various storefronts.

My guess right now is things should be wrapped up for Early Access in Fall.

I’ve had some people ask me about Oculus Quest. I actually have quickly tested the game on Oculus Quest 2. The good news it does run, but it needs several performance tweaks for it to be a quality release on there so I don’t expect that to happen till next year but who knows. I’m also interested in Apple’s new headset which should be coming this year sometime. Their M1 chip screams, so it might be a good candidate next year.
